Kabul [Afghanistan]: An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 struck Afghanistan, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks. The NCS provided the details in a post on X, stating that the quake took place in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at coordinates 36.97 N, 73.14 E.

Shallow earthquakes like this one are more dangerous than deeper ones because they release more energy closer to the Earth’s surface, resulting in stronger shaking and greater potential for damage to structures and casualties.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan, Afghanistan’s neighboring country, was also hit by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 170 kilometers. The NCS shared this information in another post on X. This was the second earthquake to strike Pakistan in a few days, following a 4.3 magnitude earthquake on March 8.

Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters like earthquakes, flooding, and landslides, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). The country has suffered extensive damage from these frequent disasters, which have further impacted already struggling communities dealing with the effects of years of conflict and underdevelopment.

Afghanistan sits on several fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it prone to earthquakes. The Hindu Kush Mountain range, where these quakes frequently occur, is a geologically active area.
