Cairo: Egypt has dispatched another 310 humanitarian aid trucks to the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing, as the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas continues, facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, according to Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS).
The convoy includes 20 trucks carrying fuel, as noted in the SIS report. These trucks will pass through the Al-Auja (Nitzana) and Kerem Shalom crossings for inspection by Israeli authorities before reaching Gaza, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
During the first six days of the ceasefire, which began on January 19, over 4,200 aid trucks have entered Gaza, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
An Egyptian security source and a representative from the Egyptian Red Crescent informed Xinhua that Egypt has also sent heavy machinery to repair roads around the crossing and those leading to nearby Palestinian cities, aiding the delivery of aid and the reception of injured Palestinians from Gaza.
A long line of trucks filled with humanitarian supplies made its way to the heavily secured Rafah crossing shortly after the ceasefire took effect. These trucks, loaded with food, clothing, medical supplies, tents, mobile toilets, and other relief items, had been stationed in various cities in Egypt’s North Sinai Governorate, including Arish, Sheikh Zuweid, and Rafah, some of which had been waiting for months to assist Palestinians in need.
The Rafah crossing has been a crucial route for delivering relief supplies from Egypt, other nations, and international organizations. Israel has controlled the Palestinian side of the crossing since May 2024, blocking its operation until the recent ceasefire was established.
The current six-week initial phase of a three-phase ceasefire agreement involves exchanging Israeli captives held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, alongside increased humanitarian aid deliveries and infrastructure repairs in Gaza.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a surprise attack across the southern Israeli border, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and around 250 captives. In retaliation, Israel has conducted strikes on Gaza, which have reportedly killed over 47,000 Palestinians, according to the latest figures from Gaza’s health authorities released on Sunday.
