As noted by the Embassy of India in Cairo, India and Egypt, both ancient civilizations, have a long history of interaction. In modern times, figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Saad Zaghloul shared aspirations for their nations’ independence, which led to a strong friendship between President Nasser and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, culminating in a Friendship Treaty in 1955. Diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level were established on August 18, 1947. The two countries have collaborated closely in multilateral forums and were founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961.

Since the 1980s, there have been five visits by Indian Prime Ministers to Egypt: Rajiv Gandhi (1985), PV Narasimha Rao (1995), IK Gujral (1997), Dr. Manmohan Singh (2009, during the NAM Summit), and Narendra Modi (2023). During PM Modi’s state visit in June 2023, both nations agreed to elevate their ties to a Strategic Partnership, and he received Egypt’s highest civilian honor, the ‘Order of the Nile.’ Additionally, PM Modi and President Sisi have met on the sidelines of various international summits, including the UNGA in September 2015 and the 9th BRICS Summit in September 2017. Most recently, PM Modi spoke with President Sisi on October 28, 2023, amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
