Tokyo: Four members of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) were injured in an explosion near the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, on Monday, according to local and Defense Ministry officials. The incident took place around 11:20 a.m. at a depot where the personnel were preparing for bomb disposal operations.

The explosion occurred at an SDF-managed storage facility for unexploded bombs within the ammunition depot area of the base. As a result, those nearby sustained finger cuts and possible hearing damage. All four injured personnel were transported to hospital, but none are in critical condition, with injuries including burns to their fingers.

Authorities confirmed that no evacuation orders have been issued for nearby residents, and there is no threat of further explosions or fire. Police are investigating the scene.

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force primarily supports disaster relief efforts, including rescue operations and handling natural disasters like earthquakes, storms, floods, volcanoes, and snow-related emergencies. Okinawa continues to host most U.S. military installations in Japan, even after the territory’s reversion to Japanese control in 1972 after World War II.
