Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday following India’s offer of support after Cyclone Chido struck Mayotte. This cyclone, reported by Meteo-France as the most powerful storm to hit Mayotte in over ninety years, caused widespread destruction, damaging neighborhoods, electrical grids, and essential infrastructure like hospitals, schools, and the airport’s control tower.
PM Modi had conveyed his condolences, saying, “Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I am confident that under President Emmanuel Macron’s leadership, France will overcome this tragedy with resilience and resolve. India stands in solidarity with France and is ready to extend all possible assistance.”
In response, Macron thanked PM Modi on social media, stating, “Thank you for your thoughts and support, dear Narendra Modi.”
Cyclone Chido, which reached Category 4 strength, first hit northern Madagascar before intensifying and making landfall in Mayotte with winds exceeding 220 km/h (136 mph). The storm affected more than 300,000 residents of the archipelago before moving on to northern Mozambique, where it also caused damage.
French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou acknowledged the severity of the storm during an inter-ministerial meeting, noting its unexpectedly violent nature. Initial reports indicate at least 11 deaths, but officials worry the toll may reach hundreds or even thousands as rescue operations proceed. Prefect Francois-Xavier Bieuville suggested the death toll could be in the thousands.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) expressed grave concerns for over 200 volunteers who are currently missing in Mayotte amidst the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido. They warned, “Winds of up to 220 km/h have devastated the French overseas territory of Mayotte. It’s feared that more than 200 volunteers are missing.”
