United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to visit Bangladesh from March 13 to 16, where he will participate in an Iftar with Rohingya refugees in Cox Bazar and meet with Muhammed Yunus, the head of the interim administration, in Dhaka, according to his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.
This visit, which highlights “Ramadan solidarity,” focuses on the distress faced by the Muslim community, particularly the Rohingyas from Myanmar, who are currently hosted by Bangladesh. Dujarric emphasized Guterres’s commitment to addressing the Rohingya crisis, which he previously handled as UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Bangladesh is currently home to over a million Rohingya who fled Myanmar due to violent military action following attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) in August 2017. The UN has referred to the Rohingya as “the most persecuted minority in the world.” Guterres has established a tradition of visiting Muslim communities during Ramadan to underscore the true essence of Islam and to show solidarity with those in need.
