Colombo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in “extensive and productive talks” with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo on Saturday. PM Modi is the first foreign leader to be hosted by the Sri Lankan President during his presidency.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “I held extensive and productive talks with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo. A few months ago, President Dissanayake chose India as his first overseas visit after assuming office. Now, I have the honor of being the first foreign leader he is hosting. This reflects his personal commitment to India-Sri Lanka ties and the strong bond between our nations.”
Several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed during PM Modi’s visit, including a trilateral MoU among India, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates for collaboration on developing Trincomalee in Sri Lanka as an energy hub.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal remarked that PM Modi and President Dissanayake discussed strategies for further strengthening their close bilateral relations. Jaiswal noted, “A vital partner in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, PM @narendramodi held a productive meeting with President @anuradisanayake of Sri Lanka at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo today.”
“Both leaders explored ways to deepen their special and close ties, reaffirming their commitment to working together towards a joint vision of ‘Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future.’ PM Modi also reiterated India’s commitment to support Sri Lanka in its economic recovery and development,” Jaiswal added.
Earlier, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at Independence Square, marking the first time Sri Lanka has honored a visiting leader in this manner. His visit is the first since 2019 and emphasizes regional development and cultural engagement.
Upon his arrival on Friday, PM Modi was greeted at the airport by six senior Sri Lankan ministers, despite the rain. Later, he interacted with members of the Indian diaspora and attended a traditional puppet performance.
