Washington: Former President Donald Trump has expressed hope that Russia and Ukraine will reach a peace agreement this week that would bring an end to the ongoing conflict. In a post on his media platform Truth Social on Sunday, Trump stated that once an agreement is reached, both countries would be able to “make a fortune” by engaging in business with the United States.
“HOPEFULLY RUSSIA AND UKRAINE WILL MAKE A DEAL THIS WEEK. BOTH WILL THEN START TO DO BIG BUSINESS WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WHICH IS THRIVING, AND MAKE A FORTUNE,” Trump wrote.
In related news, CNN reported on Friday, citing a source familiar with the proposed peace framework, that the US is prepared to recognize Russian control over Crimea as part of the peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. This proposal includes an immediate ceasefire and was discussed with Ukrainian and European officials in Paris on Thursday. However, there are still some details that need to be finalized, and the US plans to collaborate with Europe and Ukraine next week in London.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 following a military invasion—a move that has been widely condemned as illegal by the international community.
Earlier, Trump indicated that the US might “take a pass” on facilitating a peace deal if either party complicates the negotiation process. He stated, “If, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say, ‘You’re foolish, you’re foolish. You’re horrible people,’ and we’re just going to take a pass.”
Despite this warning, Trump maintained a cautiously optimistic outlook regarding the possibility of securing a deal, saying, “I think we have a really good chance of getting it done. It’s coming to a head right now.”
