New Delhi: India has donated a fleet of six school buses to Sao Tome and Principe, with a handover ceremony taking place on Thursday, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

The buses were presented to Isabel Maria Correia Viegas de Abreu, the Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Higher Education of Sao Tome and Principe, by Deepak Miglani, the Indian Ambassador to the country.

The ministry noted that this donation was made in response to a request from Sao Tome and Principe for assistance to enhance accessibility to school education. The addition of these buses will strengthen the nation’s school transport fleet, ensuring safer commutes for students while also lowering education costs for families and facilitating access to schooling.

In January 2025, India had previously sent medical supplies to Sao Tome and Principe, which included essential and life-saving medications aimed at supporting the country’s healthcare system.

The statement highlighted that India and Sao Tome and Principe share a close and amicable relationship and are expanding their bilateral cooperation. The gift of school buses is part of India’s development assistance to the Global South.

An official spokesperson from the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance children’s access to education in Sao Tome and Principe. In a post on social media platform X, he stated, “Strengthening connectivity, supporting Sustainable Development Goals. The Government of India has gifted six school buses to the Government of Sao Tome and Principe. This initiative will assist in providing safer commutes for students and reducing educational costs for families living in remote areas.”
