India and Saudi Arabia recently convened in New Delhi to evaluate the activities of the Political, Security, Social and Cultural Committee within their Strategic Partnership Council (SPC). The Indian side was represented by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, while the Saudi delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Political Affairs, Saud Al Sati. During their meeting, the two parties addressed bilateral issues as well as regional and global matters of shared interest.
The SPC, which was established in 2019, aims to enhance the Indo-Saudi relationship through a high-level framework. It consists of two subcommittees: one focused on political, security, social, and cultural affairs, and the other on economic and investment matters.
Former Indian diplomat Zikrur Rahman, who has extensive experience in various Arab nations, remarked on the potential of India-Saudi relations. In an interview with ANI, he noted, “The future looks promising for both nations as they are working together earnestly and effectively. The visits of our esteemed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016 and 2019 have significantly boosted this relationship, which had been less visible in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.” It is worth mentioning that the SPC agreement was signed during PM Modi’s trip to Saudi Arabia in 2019.
Rahman emphasized that the councils formed under the SPC are meeting regularly to assess progress and identify further actions needed to reinforce this strategic partnership, aiming for greater stability in the region and mutual interests for both countries.
