On Saturday, Iranian media reported that the country’s air defense systems were activated in central Tehran due to increasing attacks from Israel. The state news agency IRNA claimed that Iran successfully intercepted “adversarial targets” in the airspace surrounding Tehran province. Iranian state television noted hearing six loud explosions in various parts of the capital, although the source of these sounds has not been confirmed. An Iranian military official stated that air defense systems were deployed to thwart attacks on three locations near Tehran.
A security source told IRNA that some of the noises were a result of air defense operations in Tehran, which successfully engaged during the incident. Earlier on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they had carried out “precise strikes” on Iranian military targets, following Tehran’s launch of approximately 200 ballistic missiles toward Israel about a month ago.
IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Danial Hagari stated, “Right now, the Israel Defense Forces is conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran,” emphasizing that these operations are a response to ongoing attacks from the Iranian regime against Israel in recent months and are being executed under political leadership guidance.
The IDF highlighted that these strikes are in retaliation for “relentless attacks” from Iran and its proxies since October 7, asserting Israel’s right and duty to respond. They noted that the Iranian regime and its regional proxies have been attacking Israel on multiple fronts, including direct assaults from Iranian territory.
The IDF confirmed that its “defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized” and that it will take necessary actions to protect the State of Israel and its citizens. Additionally, IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari confirmed to TPS news outlet that Israel has initiated a series of strikes against Iran.
The White House also released a statement early Saturday acknowledging Israel’s targeted strikes against military objectives in Iran, framing them as an act of self-defense in response to Iran’s missile attack on October 1. Senior American officials indicated that Israel had informed the White House several hours prior to the strikes. The spokesman reiterated that the IDF is fully prepared for both offensive and defensive operations, monitoring developments from Iran and its regional proxies.
The conflict in West Asia has intensified since Hamas launched a significant terror attack on Israel on October 7 of last year.
