Beirut: In the recent escalation of conflict, Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes on Beirut and its southern suburbs, resulting in the deaths of at least 29 individuals and injuring 66 others.
The Israeli military announced on Sunday that its aircraft carried out “intelligence-based strikes on Hezbollah command centers” in areas such as Haret Hreik, Burj Barajneh, and Hadath, as reported by Xinhua news agency. Local reports indicated that 12 airstrikes occurred within a half-hour window.
Footage circulating on social media depicted large clouds of black smoke billowing from the southern suburbs of Beirut following the strikes. This assault came after Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee had urged residents of several buildings in the targeted areas to evacuate.
These airstrikes followed a Saturday attack on an eight-story residential building in the Basta Fawka neighborhood. While Israeli media suggested the strike aimed at a notable Hezbollah figure, Lebanese lawmaker and Hezbollah member Amin Sherri refuted claims that any military or civilian leaders were present in the targeted building.
In counteraction, Hezbollah stated it had successfully destroyed five Israeli Merkava tanks in southern Lebanon using guided missiles and had also launched attacks on multiple locations in northern Israel, including Kerem ben Zimra and Kfar Blum.
Since September 23, the Israeli military has significantly ramped up air attacks on Lebanon amid escalating tensions with Hezbollah, which included ground operations that commenced along its northern border in early October. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that since the conflict erupted on October 8, 2023, Israeli airstrikes have led to 3,754 deaths and 15,626 injuries.
