Tel Aviv: The Israeli military urged people to evacuate three ports in Yemen controlled by Hamas, warning that it will defend itself against any threats or enemies, after a ceasefire deal between the US and the Houthis was reached without involving Israel, CNN reported. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, announced via X that ports of Ras Isa, Hodeidah, and Salif should be evacuated.
This warning comes amid recent tensions after Israel intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, the first since US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between the US and the Houthis last week. Despite the ceasefire, the Houthis declared they would continue attacking Israel to show solidarity with Gaza. Israel has stated it would target the Houthis if necessary, with Defence Minister Israel Katz affirming their readiness to respond to future threats.
This marks the second evacuation warning issued in Yemen within a week; earlier, on May 6, the Israeli military warned about Yemen’s Sana’a international airport before launching strikes that disabled the facility entirely.
Last week, Trump announced that the US would halt bombing operations against the Iran-backed Houthis after they expressed a desire to cease fighting. Speaking alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump stated, “We will honor that, and we will stop the bombings,” referencing US military actions since mid-March, launched in response to attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea and against Israel.
The ceasefire deal with the Houthis was mediated by Oman, which announced that it had facilitated a truce following discussions with the US and Yemeni authorities. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi posted on X that efforts aimed at de-escalation had successfully resulted in a ceasefire.
When questioned about future actions if the Houthis attacked Israel again, Trump responded that he would discuss the situation if necessary. Houthi leaders confirmed the ceasefire but warned they would continue their aggression against Israel until Israel halts its military operations in Gaza.
