Jerusalem: Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on Wednesday targeting Houthi positions at Sanaa’s main airport in Yemen, according to Israeli military officials. The attack resulted in the destruction of several Houthi aircraft, including the last remaining Yemenia Airlines plane operating at the airport, as confirmed by Houthi authorities.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the operation as part of “Operation Golden Jewel,” a campaign designed to weaken the Houthis’ ability to carry out future attacks on Israel. Katz emphasized that this action sends a strong message that any aggression against Israel will meet a heavy response, and he vowed that Israel would continue targeting Yemeni ports and strategic infrastructure used by the Houthis, including repeated strikes on Sanaa airport.

Houthi general director Khaled al-Shaief stated on social media that the Israeli airstrikes destroyed Yemen’s last operational Yemenia Airlines plane at Sanaa airport, sharing images of the aircraft engulfed in smoke and flames.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Houthis have launched seven ballistic missiles and several drones towards Israeli territory over the past two weeks. Most of these projectiles were intercepted, causing no major damage or injuries. The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have claimed they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians since November 2023, and have said they would halt attacks if Israel ends its military operations and blockade of Gaza.

Israel has conducted multiple significant airstrikes in Yemen, including attacks on Sanaa’s airport two weeks ago, which rendered it inoperable.
