Washington: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized left-wing politicians for what she sees as their “nervousness” over Donald Trump’s past victory, arguing that conservatives are unfairly labeled as a “threat to democracy,” while leftist leaders are celebrated for similar international alliances.

Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2025 in Washington, Meloni praised Trump and US Vice President JD Vance, targeting “elites” and leftist politicians. She stated that the Left’s anxiety has escalated to hysteria due to conservative successes and their growing global collaboration.

Meloni pointed out a perceived double standard, contrasting the praise given to former US President Bill Clinton and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair for establishing a global liberal network in the 1990s with the current criticism of leaders like Trump, herself, Argentine President Javier Milei, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as threats to democracy.

She argued that despite media and political attacks, conservative leaders continue to win elections because the public is no longer swayed by leftist narratives. She emphasized that voters support conservatives because they advocate for freedom, national pride, secure borders, and traditional values, while opposing what she termed “green leftist insanity” and “wokeism.”

Meloni expressed confidence in Trump as a strong leader and dismissed fears that his presidency might cause divisions within the conservative movement, asserting that those wishing for such divisions would be mistaken. Her speech was well-received by the conservative audience, highlighting the increasing collaboration among right-wing leaders worldwide.
