Bangkok: As of Saturday, Myanmar and its surrounding regions have experienced a total of 468 aftershocks since the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck on March 28.
The Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation Division reported that among these aftershocks, there were 184 with magnitudes between 1.0 and 2.9, 198 ranging from 3.0 to 3.9, 73 between 4.0 and 4.9, and 13 with magnitudes from 5.0 to 5.9.
In Thailand, 21 mild aftershocks have been recorded, primarily in Mae Hong Son province, with magnitudes between 1.0 and 5.9 since the initial quake. The latest aftershock in Myanmar occurred early on Saturday but had no impact on Thailand, according to media reports.
The devastating earthquake has resulted in 3,689 fatalities and 5,020 injuries in Myanmar, with 139 individuals still unaccounted for as of Friday, per the State Administration Council Information Team.
In Thailand, the death toll has risen to 27, with 9 people injured and 67 others still missing following the quake. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported that the site of the collapsed 30-story under-construction State Audit Office building in Chatuchak district has seen a total of 103 victims.
In response to the disaster, the Thai government has ramped up investigations into other construction projects linked to the Chinese contractor of the collapsed building. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has directed various agencies to examine all construction projects awarded to China Railway No. 10 Engineering Group.
“All concerned agencies were instructed to delve deeper to find out how many other projects the company is undertaking. All buildings in Bangkok must meet legal standards, with safety as the top priority,” PM Shinawatra stated, adding that the collapse has not only cost lives but has also negatively affected Thailand’s reputation.
