Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigns after 19 killed in anti-government protests

Kathmandu: Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on Monday, taking moral responsibility after 19 people were killed during violent protests against the government’s decision to ban social media.

He tendered his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during a cabinet meeting, calling the loss of lives “unimaginable” and saying it would be unethical to remain in office.

The Gen-Z-led protests erupted in Kathmandu and other cities, turning violent after authorities deployed the army and issued shoot-at-sight orders. According to the Health Ministry, 19 protesters died, including 16 in the capital, while 347 are being treated in hospitals.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) demanded Prime Minister Oli’s resignation and fresh elections, condemning what it called a “brutal crackdown” on demonstrators.

Unrest has spread nationwide, with curfews imposed in Butwal, Bhairahawa, and Itahari. In Damak, protesters hurled stones at Oli’s residence, while highways were blocked with burning tyres.

As the crisis deepens, the cabinet held an emergency meeting in Baluwatar. Despite curfews and heavy security, protesters continue to defy restrictions, escalating pressure on the Oli government.
