Five countries, including Pakistan, were elected non-permanent members on Thursday for a two-year term starting in 2025. The 193-member UN General Assembly held elections for five vacant seats through secret ballot.
The Security Council is an important United Nations body responsible for international peace and security, with five permanent and ten non-permanent members. Elections were held on Thursday for the five vacant seats of temporary members. In the election, Pakistan, Somalia, Denmark, Greece and Panama were elected as temporary members.
Three big reasons
Somalia got 179 votes and Pakistan got 182 votes for the two seats of African and Asia-Pacific countries. For Latin American and Caribbean countries, Panama received 183 votes, and for Western European and other countries, Denmark received 184 and Greece received 182 votes.
These newly elected member countries will replace Japan, Mozambique, Ecuador, Malta and Switzerland. His tenure ended on December 31. The two-year tenure of the five new members will begin on January 1, 2025.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed happiness on being elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and described it as a moment of pride.
