Pakistan: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) announced plans to initiate protests and encircle the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) offices if the agency fails to ensure a steady electricity supply to the residents of Haripur district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, as reported by Dawn. JI’s Haripur emir, Tahir Atiq Siddiqui, made the statement during a reception for the newly-elected members of the Haripur Press Club, which was also attended by JI district general secretary Qazi Tanzeelur Rehman.
Siddiqui highlighted that unannounced power outages have been occurring twice a week in the district for several months, adversely impacting small businesses. He pointed out that daily workers at various local industries—such as welding shops, grinding machines, marble factories, and tailoring—are particularly affected, losing up to eight hours of work and, consequently, their daily income.
He threatened to take to the streets and surround PESCO offices if the loadshedding did not cease immediately, criticizing the inadequate enforcement of the Minimum Wage Act in Haripur’s industrial sector, which left workers without a monthly salary of PKR 36,000. Furthermore, he criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government for rendering the Haripur Tehsil Municipal Administration financially unstable, resulting in unpaid salaries to its employees and subsequent protests. Siddiqui dismissed claims by the federal government regarding inflation control as mere rhetoric, noting that prices for essential items, including sugar—a staple—have recently surged by PKR 40.
