Islamabad, July 12: Amid monsoon rains in Pakistan, officials have warned that heavy rains in many places may cause the water level of rivers to rise. Flooding is also expected in some vulnerable areas.

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) urged people to be cautious and avoid going to waterlogged areas. People have been asked to be cautious, especially due to the alert till July 17.

Monsoon is active in Punjab due to moisture from the Arabian Sea

It is raining intermittently in Lahore, which has increased the humidity. According to the NDMA, at least 98 people have lost their lives and 185 others have been injured due to torrential rains and flash floods across the country since June 26.

Punjab province has reported the highest number of deaths at 37, including 20 children, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 30 people losing their lives. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the temperature in Lahore is expected to be between a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius. Light rain is also expected in the city, due to which the PDMA has issued a warning of rainfall and strong winds till July 17.

NDMA has issued an alert from July 13 to 17

The National Emergency Operations Center of the NDMA has issued an alert from July 13 to 17. It said that during this period, due to monsoon, heavy rains may occur in many areas and the intensity of rain may increase.

According to a report in Pakistan’s leading newspaper The Express Tribune, water flow is likely to increase in all major rivers including Indus, Kabul, Jhelum and Chenab.

Flash floods and risk of local floods in major cities

Flash floods are likely in Jhal Magsi, Kachhi, Sibi, Killa Saifullah, Zhob and Musakhel districts of Balochistan. At the same time, there is also a risk of local floods in Khuzdar, Awaran, Lasbella and Kalat districts of southern Balochistan.

People living near rivers and streams have been advised to be cautious, especially during heavy rains and flooding at night. People in flood-prone areas have been asked to look for safe routes in advance and keep their valuables, vehicles and animals at high places.
