Gilgit: Residents of Jatial city in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan have taken to the streets in protest due to extended power outages and severe electricity shortages. The unrest has been sparked by a malfunctioning transformer, which has left over 300 homes without a steady power supply for several days. The situation has worsened during Ramadan, with locals struggling without electricity, as reported by Markhor Times.
The protest began at Public Chowk, where citizens demanded immediate action from authorities. One protester threatened to stage demonstrations outside the Chief Minister’s house and the secretary’s office if their concerns were not addressed. The issue began when one of the area’s two transformers broke down, leaving only one functioning transformer to supply power to 301 households.
The remaining transformer has been insufficient, providing electricity for only about 1.5 hours in the evening and 40 minutes in the afternoon. This has made it challenging for residents to carry out daily tasks and observe the fast during Ramadan, with no reliable power for essential appliances or relief from the heat. Locals expressed frustration, fearing that their basic needs would continue to be unmet.
Although local officials, including the Tehsildar, promised a new transformer within two days, these assurances have failed to restore trust among the community. With no resolution in sight, residents have warned that they will escalate their protest with the Awami Action Committee if the issue is not promptly addressed. They are urging immediate action to repair the malfunctioning transformer and restore a dependable power supply.
