Stockholm: Salwan Momika, a 38-year-old man known for burning the Quran during protests in Sweden, has been shot dead in Södertälje, Stockholm County, according to Swedish media reports on Thursday.
Momika was reportedly killed while live-streaming from his apartment in Hovsjo late Wednesday, just a day before a court was set to deliver a verdict in an incitement case against him.
Prosecutor Rasmus Ohman confirmed that five individuals have been arrested on suspicion of murder. The Stockholm Police received reports of the shooting at 11:11 PM local time, and the crime scene was cordoned off for investigation, with drones deployed to survey the area.
Salwan Najem, a friend of Momika, told Swedish state broadcaster SVT that police confirmed Momika’s death to him. Najem recounted a conversation with Momika’s girlfriend, who was distraught and claimed, “they killed him.”
Momika’s actions, including burning and desecrating the Quran, had previously provoked outrage from various countries, notably Saudi Arabia, which condemned his actions in October 2023, stating they inflamed the sentiments of millions of Muslims globally.
