Moscow [Russia]: Yury Ushakov, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, has publicly supported US President Donald Trump’s claim of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Ushakov stated that the conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations was resolved through Trump’s personal involvement, as discussed in a phone call between Trump and Putin. He highlighted that the topics of the Middle East and the India-Pakistan conflict were discussed, and that Trump’s direct intervention helped halt the hostilities.

This assertion has led to some controversy, especially considering India’s position. Shashi Tharoor, a leader of the All-Party Delegation and a Congress MP, clarified during a meeting with US Vice President JD Vance that India does not see Trump’s claim as valid. Tharoor explained that the delegation emphasized that mediation requires equal standing between parties, which cannot apply to India and Pakistan. India considers itself a victim of terror, whereas Pakistan is seen as a supporter of terrorism, making the notion of mediation inappropriate.

Tharoor pointed out that the US understood India’s position clearly and that there was no ambiguity among US officials. He reiterated that India’s stance is that there is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims and that offering mediatory roles to nations that harbor terrorists is unacceptable. Trump’s claim of brokering peace was made on May 31, with the US president asserting that his efforts, including trade negotiations, possibly prevented a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan.
