New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India this year. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that preparations are being made for the President’s visit. However, he did not say which month or date this visit could take place.

Lavrov said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made his first foreign visit to Russia after being elected Prime Minister for the third consecutive time. Now it is our turn. President Vladimir Putin has accepted the invitation of the Indian government.

The Russian Foreign Minister made this statement during the summit ‘Russia and India: Towards a New Bilateral Agenda’. This meeting was organized by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC).

Putin last came to India in 2021

Russian President Putin visited India on 06 December 2021. He came to India for just 4 hours. During this time, 28 agreements were signed between India and Russia. These included military and technical agreements. Both the countries had set a target of 30 billion dollars (2 lakh 53 thousand crores rupees) annual trade by 2025.

This will be Putin’s first visit to India since the Ukraine war began in February 2022. This visit is expected to advance a new economic roadmap for 2030 between the two countries.

India and Russia have agreed to double their bilateral trade to more than $100 billion annually. Currently, the bilateral trade between the two countries is around $60 billion.

Putin is avoiding traveling to other countries after the arrest warrant was issued

In March 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant against Putin. The court held Putin responsible for war crimes on the basis of allegations of kidnapping and deportation of children in Ukraine.

This was the first time that the ICC had issued an arrest warrant against the top leader of a permanent member country of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The US, Russia, China, Britain and France are permanent members of the UNSC.

Since then, Putin has been avoiding visits to other countries. He did not come to India to attend the G20 summit last year. He has also not participated in the G20 summit being held in Brazil this year. In his place, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attended both the events.
