Washington: Six people were injured in a stabbing incident in Washington’s Trinidad neighborhood when a man, reportedly in an “altered mental state” from an unknown substance, began attacking individuals.
The suspect, who also inflicted wounds on himself during the assault, is now in custody, as reported by ABC News.
The incident occurred on Thursday at approximately 3:22 p.m. near Montello Avenue and Meigs Place NE. Police quickly responded and found multiple victims with stab wounds.
Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith explained that the suspect first stabbed himself while walking down the street before attacking a female acquaintance. He then went on to stab others, including two bystanders who tried to intervene.
The Metropolitan Police Department posted an alert on X, stating: “Alert: We are investigating a stabbing in the area of Montello Avenue and Simms Place NE. If you have information, call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.”
Among the victims are four women and two men, all of whom were transported to local hospitals due to “a senseless assault,” according to Smith. The group includes a grandmother and her two granddaughters. Fortunately, all the victims are in stable condition, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening; however, their ages have not been disclosed.
Police found the suspect lying on the ground nearby, along with a knife believed to have been used in the attack, just a few feet from him. The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, has been taken to the hospital and is currently undergoing surgery.
Smith emphasized the need to address substance abuse issues within the community, stating, “This incident underscores the urgent need for addressing substance abuse issues in our communities.”
Several roads in the area remain closed as the investigation continues, with more details expected to emerge.
