Seoul: Detained South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol held a meeting with the leadership of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) at the Seoul Detention Centre in Uiwang. During this meeting, he urged party leaders to unite in order to “bring hope” to the youth and the general public, according to officials.
Yoon’s call for unity was directed towards PPP interim leader Kwon Young-se, floor leader Kweon Seong-dong, and Rep. Na Kyung-won. Na shared with reporters that their discussions included concerns about South Korea’s future amidst current international political and economic challenges.
Regarding his martial law declaration, Yoon stated it was a necessary action taken out of a “heavy responsibility” to prevent the National Assembly from devolving into a “one-party dictatorship” dominated by the main opposition, the Democratic Party.
The impeached president has been detained since January 19 over accusations of insurrection and abuse of power linked to his brief imposition of martial law on December 3, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Earlier that day, South Korean police announced their intent to raid the Presidential Security Service (PSS) due to allegations that it attempted to obstruct investigators from executing a warrant for Yoon’s detention last month. The raid is focused on acting PSS chief Kim Seong-hoon and Lee Kwang-woo, head of the PSS bodyguard division, who are suspected of hindering official duties and misusing their power during the initial detention attempt.
Police have dispatched investigators to the PSS office in Yongsan, central Seoul, and are awaiting access for a search and seizure operation. They have also searched the homes of Kim and Lee, where they obtained two phones each—one personal and one secure work phone. The server for these secure phones is located at the PSS office. Police have sought arrest warrants for Kim and Lee on two occasions, but both requests were denied by the prosecution.
