Taipei: Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) has reported heightened Chinese military activity near its territory, noting the detection of five People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft and six People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels in the surrounding area. The ministry confirmed that three of the five aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan S   trait, entering Taiwan’s southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

In a post on X, the MND stated, “Up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today, we detected 5 sorties of PLA aircraft and 6 PLAN vessels around Taiwan. 3 out of 5 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s southwestern ADIZ. We have been monitoring the situation and responding accordingly.”

Earlier on Sunday, the MND reported that 14 PLA aircraft and 6 PLAN vessels were detected around Taiwan by 6 a.m. local time (UTC+8), with nine of these aircraft crossing the median line into the northern and southwestern ADIZ.

In recent weeks, China has significantly enhanced its capacity for amphibious assaults on Taiwan’s shores, showcasing new naval equipment, including the formal launch of a unique advanced landing helicopter assault (LHA) vessel and the mass production of floating bridge docks to facilitate ship unloading during beach landings.

The ongoing Taiwan-China conflict is a long-standing geopolitical issue focused on Taiwan’s sovereignty. While Taiwan operates as a de facto independent state with its own government, military, and economy, Beijing views it as a breakaway province under the “One China” policy. Since the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949), when the Republic of China government retreated to Taiwan, China has employed diplomatic, economic, and military tactics to pressure Taiwan, which continues to assert its independence with strong domestic support.
