Washington [US]: After a series of bomb threats directed at Air India flights, which resulted in emergency landings and heightened security measures across various countries, the US government has stated that “threats against Air India flights are extremely serious.” One notable incident involved a flight from Mumbai to Chicago that had to divert to Canada after receiving a threat, while another Air India flight was escorted by fighter jets in Singapore due to a similar alert. These ongoing threats have raised significant concerns regarding the safety of commercial aviation.

During a press briefing on Tuesday (local time), Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US Department of State, addressed the matter. He emphasized that any threats to commercial aviation are taken very seriously by law enforcement agencies, and he referred inquiries to those agencies. The threats, reportedly made by several individuals based in the US over recent months, are being treated with utmost seriousness by authorities.

This situation has led to speculation about its potential impact on diplomatic relations between India and the US. However, Miller reassured the public, affirming that the partnership between the two countries remains strong. “India continues to be an incredibly strong partner of the United States,” he stated, highlighting the commitment of both nations to maintain open and honest discussions on issues of concern.

In Singapore, the response to the threats was prompt and effective, with the country scrambling its jets to escort an Air India Express flight away from densely populated areas. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen reported that the flight, AXB684, which was headed for Singapore, received an email warning of a bomb on board. Two F-15SG jets were deployed to ensure the plane landed safely at Singapore Changi Airport around 10:04 PM. Ng further noted that ground-based air defense systems and explosive ordnance disposal teams were activated, and once the plane landed, it was handed over to airport police for further investigation.

Authorities in both Canada and Singapore are actively investigating these incidents, while security measures surrounding commercial aviation remain elevated. The international community is closely observing the situation as India and its global partners work to safeguard passengers amidst these threats.
