Seoul: A South Korean Navy patrol plane crashed into a mountain in Pohang on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of three of the four people onboard, with the fourth passenger confirmed to be injured. The crash happened at 1:50 p.m., shortly after the aircraft took off from an air base in Pohang at 1:43 p.m. for training. Witnesses saw smoke rising from the area, and rescue teams retrieved the three bodies from the wreckage. The Navy stated that the aircraft was a P-3 maritime patrol plane, known for its anti-submarine roles, and that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause and casualties. No civilians were harmed. Firefighters are working to extinguish fires at the site. Acting President Lee Ju-ho was informed about the incident and urged full efforts to rescue any survivors and protect the environment.
Additionally, in a separate incident, a Jeju Air flight carrying 183 passengers and six crew members veered off the runway shortly after landing at Da Nang International Airport in Vietnam, but no injuries occurred. The B737-800 aircraft, arriving from Incheon, ran onto a safety zone while taxiing, causing one tire to tear. The airline changed the damaged tire after passengers disembarked and sent a replacement aircraft for the return flight, which was delayed by over 14 hours. South Korea’s transport authorities are investigating the cause of this runway deviation.
