Washington: Following retaliatory tariffs from Canada on $155 billion worth of American goods, Donald Trump threatened to escalate the trade war with reciprocal tariff hikes. This came after Canada’s response to Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada. Trump has also repeatedly called for Canada to become the 51st state.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized Trump’s trade war as an attempt to weaken the Canadian economy for annexation, a claim he strongly refuted. Trudeau also highlighted the negative impact on families in both countries and announced that Canada will challenge the US measures at the World Trade Organization and through the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.
Ontario’s premier, Doug Ford, threatened to impose a 25% export tax on electricity sold to the US and potentially cut it off entirely. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also pledged to retaliate against the US tariff hikes, with specific products to be announced soon, and she refuted claims of Mexican government complicity in drug trafficking.
China, also affected by increased US tariffs, announced retaliatory measures, including tariffs on US farm exports and expanded export controls on US companies.
