Dhaka: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to visit Bangladesh in mid-March, amid ongoing political tensions in the country, according to officials. UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, recently visited Bangladesh prior to Guterres’ arrival. The UN chief plans to tour the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar, as noted by Bishop during her meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna.
Md Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, confirmed the visit, stating, “We are still working out his final programs,” without providing further details. Sources indicated that the three-day trip will commence on March 13.
This visit is deemed highly significant given the political and security challenges in Bangladesh. On Tuesday, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman emphasized that the country’s sovereignty is at risk if citizens do not set aside their differences and refrain from personal attacks. He warned that failure to collaborate could jeopardize the nation’s independence and sovereignty, urging for peace and harmony instead of conflict.
Regarding the upcoming national elections, he expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and inclusive electoral process, with reforms being implemented prior to the polls. He reiterated his agreement with Dr. Yunus on the necessity of these elections, aiming for them to occur by December or within 18 months, indicating that the government is moving in that direction.
