New Delhi: The US Embassy in India issued a warning on Saturday, cautioning individuals that staying in the US beyond their authorized period could lead to deportation or a permanent ban on re-entry in the future. The embassy posted on X, “If you overstay your visa, you risk being deported and potentially banned from returning to the United States.”

Meanwhile, a federal appeals court on Friday refused to allow the Trump administration to restart deportations to countries other than the migrants’ home nations without prior notice or an opportunity for the migrants to seek protection from persecution or torture, CNN reported. The US First Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the government’s request to overturn a lower court’s order that temporarily halted such deportations. The ruling comes amid concerns over reports that migrants might be sent to Libya, a country criticized for mistreatment of detainees and ongoing instability.
The court expressed worries about the potential “irreparable harm” caused by wrongful removals. Earlier in March, a US District Judge, Brian Murphy, blocked the Trump administration from deporting migrants to other countries without providing prior written notice and a chance to contest the removal.
In April, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem reminded all foreign nationals residing in the US for over 30 days that they must register with the government by April 11 under the Alien Registration Act. Failure to do so is considered a criminal offense, punishable by fines or imprisonment.
She reiterated the administration’s stance, stating, “President Trump and I send a clear message: those in our country illegally should leave now. If they do, they might have the opportunity to return, enjoy our freedoms, and pursue the American Dream.” She added, “We will enforce all immigration laws consistently for the safety and security of our nation.”
On January 20, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14159, titled “Protecting the American People Against Invasion,” which directs DHS to re-establish order and accountability within the immigration system, including enforcing the Alien Registration Act.
