Washington: In commemoration of the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) held a press conference in Washington DC on Tuesday, honoring the bravery of Chinese dissidents and pro-democracy supporters. The bipartisan event took place at the US Capitol and brought together members of Congress, human rights advocates, and survivors of CCP repression, reflecting on the significance of June 4, 1989, and the ongoing fight for freedom in China.

Committee Chairman John Moolenaar stated, “For 76 years, the CCP’s greatest victims have been the Chinese people. Even in China today, commemorating Tiananmen is illegal. Yet we remember—the man who stood before a tank and students demanding reform.”

Prominent legislators, including Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi and Representatives Gus Bilirakis, Young Kim, Dan Newhouse, Zach Nunn, Chris Smith, and Jill Tokuda, participated in the event. Chinese dissidents Wang Dan and Wei Jingsheng, both survivors of CCP persecution, shared heartfelt testimonies, warning against complacency and calling for global solidarity with those resisting authoritarian rule in China.

During the event, Moolenaar presented a letter to Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, urging her to end the sister-city relationship with Beijing. The letter, which was part of a coalition of lawmakers’ efforts, condemned the CCP’s history of violence and censorship and emphasized the need for moral clarity and action against CCP propaganda. The event reaffirmed America’s support for democratic values as China continues to suppress the rights of its citizens.
