Western Europe Experiences Record-Breaking Heat in June

Brussels: Western Europe recorded its hottest June ever, with average temperatures reaching 20.49°C, driven by two intense heatwaves that caused extreme weather across the region.

The first heatwave, from June 17 to 22, affected countries including Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the UK, according to the EU-supported Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). A more severe second heatwave occurred at the end of June, with the region hitting a record daily average temperature of 24.9°C on June 30 and July 1—marking the highest June temperatures on record.

June 2025’s temperatures were 0.06°C higher than the previous high in 2003 and 2.81°C above the 30-year average from 1991-2020. The C3S attributed this to “heat domes”—persistent high-pressure systems that trap hot air, leading to droughts, increased ozone pollution, and heightened wildfire risks.

Throughout the period, many parts of southern Europe experienced tropical nights—when temperatures do not fall below 20°C—with some areas in Spain experiencing up to 24 such nights, significantly above June averages. Mediterranean coastlines, which usually see few or no tropical nights in June, recorded 10 to 15 nights, according to Xinhua news agency.

This nighttime heat can hinder body recovery from daytime stress, increasing health risks for vulnerable populations. Additionally, the western Mediterranean Sea saw an extraordinary marine heatwave, with sea surface temperatures reaching an all-time high of 27°C on June 30 and a record daily anomaly of 3.7°C.

Samantha Burgess from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts noted that this intense heat was intensified by record sea temperatures and warned that, as the planet warms, heatwaves are likely to grow more frequent, severe, and widespread across Europe. Globally, June 2025 ranks as the third-warmest June on record, following 2023 and 2024.
