The Manipur government on Tuesday ordered the temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services for three days in five districts, amid protests and tight security arrangements following the deaths of two children.
Protests erupt after children’s deaths
A five-month-old girl and a five-year-old boy were killed in a suspected rocket attack on a house in Bishnupur district early Tuesday, sparking protests across the state.
The injured were taken to a hospital in Imphal, where both children succumbed to their injuries, while their mother was also injured in the attack.
Internet services suspended in 5 districts
In view of the law and order situation, the administration has suspended internet and mobile data services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts with immediate effect.
During this time, protesters attempted to storm the CRPF camp in Moirang and set several oil tankers on fire.
Full story of the attack
The attack occurred at around 1:03 am in Moirang Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, where a projectile landed on the home of a BSF jawan while he was sleeping.
The blast spread panic throughout the area. According to officials, Kuki militants are suspected to be involved in the attack. Another rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) was also recovered near the site of the incident.
Security increased, situation tense
Security forces have increased deployment in the area and launched a search operation in the surrounding hilly areas to identify the accused and prevent further violence.
State Home Minister K. Govindas condemned the incident, calling it a “barbaric act,” and assured strict action against the culprits.
The situation in the state remains fragile due to ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities that have been ongoing since 2023.
