Sonia Gandhi Condoles Death of Haryana IPS Officer, Slams ‘Prejudiced Attitude’ of Those in Power

New Delhi: The alleged suicide of senior Haryana Police officer Y. Puran Kumar continued to stir political reactions on Saturday, with Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressing condolences to the bereaved family and condemning what she termed as the “prejudiced and biased attitude of those in power.”

Sonia Gandhi’s Letter to the Officer’s Wife

In a heartfelt letter addressed to Amneet P. Kumar, the late officer’s wife and a senior IAS officer in Haryana, Sonia Gandhi described the incident as both “shocking and deeply saddening.”

She wrote, “The news of the tragic death of your husband and senior IPS officer, Mr. Y. Puran Kumar, in a tragic accident is both shocking and deeply saddening. My heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family in this time of immense difficulty.”

Amneet Kumar has alleged that her husband faced sustained caste-based harassment and mental torture from senior officials, which ultimately pushed him to take his life.

In her Hindi letter, Sonia Gandhi stated, “The passing of Y. Puran Kumar will remind us that even today, the prejudiced and biased attitude of those in power deprives even the most senior officials of social justice. I and millions of our countrymen stand with you on this path to justice.”

She added, “I pray to God to grant you patience, courage, and strength in this difficult situation.”

The death of the officer, who held the rank of Inspector General, has drawn widespread condemnation and rekindled debates on caste discrimination within the bureaucracy.

BSP chief Mayawati, in a post on X, described the incident as a “national shame”, saying it reflected the persistent caste-based bias in India’s administrative systems.

She expressed solidarity with the Dalit and Bahujan communities, noting the “grief and outrage” the case has triggered nationwide.

Background of the Case

Y. Puran Kumar was found dead at his Chandigarh residence on October 7, in what police have termed an alleged case of suicide. Reports suggest that a “final note” recovered from the scene mentioned harassment by senior colleagues, fuelling demands for an independent inquiry.

The incident has since evolved into a major political flashpoint, prompting calls from opposition parties for accountability and justice, while also reigniting discussions on systemic discrimination within government institutions.
