Chandigarh: The suicide case of senior Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar remains unresolved. A standoff has persisted between the IPS officer’s family and the government for six consecutive days. Today (Monday) marks the seventh day. A postmortem examination could not be conducted due to the family’s lack of consent.
Yesterday, Sunday, the Chandigarh Police sent a notice to the IPS officer’s IAS wife, Amneet P. Kumar, asking her to complete the identification process. The Chandigarh administration will conduct the postmortem by doctors from PGI. This board will also include a ballistics expert and a magistrate.
However, IAS officer Amneet and his brother Amit Ratan Kotfatta, an MLA from Bathinda, Punjab, are adamant on removing Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrughan Kapoor. The government has already tried to placate them by removing Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia.
Meanwhile, Telangana Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has reached Puran Kumar’s home in Chandigarh to offer condolences to his wife. Puran Kumar was originally from Andhra Pradesh. The state of Telangana was formed after separating from Andhra Pradesh.
The Telangana Deputy CM said, “The DGP and SP should be suspended and immediately arrested.” He added that Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also spoke with the family over the phone. “We will not stay silent. If such injustice can happen to a Dalit officer, how can other Dalits feel safe? DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor had been harassing Y. Puran Kumar for a long time,” he alleged.
Big updates related to IPS suicide case.
•In the Mahapanchayat of Dalit community organizations held on Sunday, a 48-hour ultimatum was given to the Chandigarh Police Administration for the arrest of DGP and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia.
•Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also appears to be actively involved in the matter. His chief media advisor, Sudesh Kataria, met with Amneet late Sunday night.
•The Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission has also taken cognizance of the suicide case of IPS Puran Kumar and has sought a report from the DGP of Chandigarh.
•The Chandigarh Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also begun investigating the corruption case filed in Rohtak against IPS officer Sushil Kumar, a gunman. Government records have been sought in this case. In his suicide note, IPS officer Puran had alleged that he was implicated in this case.
•In the IPS suicide case, the Chandigarh Police has now invoked Section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST Act, replacing Section 3(1)(r). This section provides for life imprisonment and a fine. The previous section provided for a sentence of up to five years and a fine.
