Tehran: Iran has declared 40 days of public mourning following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The 40th day of death is called Arbaeen in Shia Islam and holds great religious significance. This mourning period allows time for religious rituals and leadership transition.

News of Khamenei’s death came after US and Israeli airstrikes, dubbed Operation Epic Fury/Lion’s Roar. His office confirmed his death and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across the country.

Security has been increased in Iran, especially in Tehran and major cities. The focus now is on who will choose Khamenei’s successor—whether it will be the theocratic establishment or the Revolutionary Guard, especially in times of war.

State Media Presents Death as ‘Martyrdom’

State media presented his death as “Martyrdom of the Guardian” and described it as a sacrifice for Iran’s sovereignty. The official Persian account shared a Quranic verse (Sura Al-Ahzab 33:23). Tasnim News Agency reported that Khamenei was martyred in his office on Sunday morning.
