Iran-flagged cargo ship seized as it crosses Hormuz, claims Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that the United States has seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship that was attempting to evade its naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that this action marks the first major incident since the blockade of Iranian ports began last week.

Trump announced on social media that the vessel was intercepted in the Gulf of Oman by a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer. The ship was issued a warning to halt, but it failed to comply with the order; subsequently, the Navy launched a “direct strike that breached the engine room,” thereby bringing the vessel to a standstill.

He further added that U.S. Marines have been deployed aboard the ship and are currently conducting an internal inspection to determine the nature of the cargo on board. The vessel is reported to be named ‘Tosca’.

Tense Atmosphere Ahead of Talks

There has been no immediate reaction from Iran regarding this incident. This move has further exacerbated an already tense situation. The incident came to light just as Trump had previously announced that U.S. negotiators would travel to Pakistan on Monday to hold a second round of talks with Iran. These talks were expected to lead to an extension of the two-week temporary ceasefire.

Iran Has Not Confirmed Participation in Talks

Iran has not yet officially confirmed its participation in these negotiations. However, Iran’s chief negotiator and Speaker of Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, stated that they would not back away from diplomacy. Nevertheless, a significant divide still persists between the two sides.

Security Heightened in Islamabad

Pakistan, too, has not officially confirmed the second round of talks. However, security in Islamabad has been tightened, and preparations have been accelerated. According to sources, preparations for the negotiations—facilitated by intermediary nations—are nearly complete, and U.S. security teams are already present in Pakistan.

According to the White House, Vice President JD Vance will lead the US delegation and will be joined by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who also participated in the first round of extensive talks.
