Iran’s IRGC says it attacked US bases in Jordan in retaliation for Larak Island strike

Tehran: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Monday that it launched a combined missile and drone attack on US air bases in Jordan, describing the strike as retaliation for the US-Israeli aerial attack on Iran’s Larak Island.

According to Iran’s Fars news agency, citing an IRGC statement, Iranian forces targeted “technical and maintenance infrastructure” as well as areas where “enemy fighter jets” were stationed at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq US bases in Jordan.

The IRGC claimed the attack inflicted heavy damage.

“Aggression and crimes will not solve the enemy’s desperation in attempting to weaken the Islamic Republic’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, and every attack will be met with even more devastating responses,” the statement said.

Iran retaliates after Larak Island strike

The reported Iranian attack came a day after US forces struck two IRGC rocket launchers on Larak Island, an Iranian island located near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins said the US military carried out the strike after observing IRGC forces preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.

“Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz,” Hawkins said in a statement.

Hawkins added that US forces were monitoring the area closely and remained prepared to protect the free flow of commerce through the strategic waterway.

IRGC reports casualties on Larak Island

The IRGC said multiple military personnel and civilians were killed or wounded in Sunday’s attack on Larak Island in Iran’s Hormozgan province, describing it as a “US-Israeli” attack.

In a statement published by its official news outlet, Sepah News, the IRGC vowed that the attack would be met with “punishment for the aggressor.”

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing unofficial reports, said at least two people were killed and two others injured in what it described as a US drone attack on the island.

Larak Island is located off the coast of Bandar Abbas, east of Qeshm Island and south of Hormuz Island.

Tensions rise around Strait of Hormuz

The latest exchange of attacks has further escalated tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for global maritime trade and energy shipments.

The US strike on Larak Island was described as the first known US strike against Iran since late July.

The latest developments come amid continued tensions over the security of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s control over the strategic waterway.
