Protests in Iran: Death toll surpasses 3,400, fears of confrontation with the US

Iran: According to an NGO, more than 3,400 people have died so far in the regime’s crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran. Meanwhile, all eyes are on former US President Donald Trump’s next move. Some officials have said a US attack could be “imminent,” while Trump said he was “waiting and monitoring the situation.”

The protests, which began after Iran’s national currency, the rial, hit a record low in December 2025 and were linked to inflation and rising costs of living, have now escalated into a nationwide uprising. This turmoil has also increased global tensions, with fears of military intervention by the Trump-led US administration, and Tehran is preparing for a potential confrontation.

Protests against the deteriorating economy began spreading in Iran on December 28th, quickly taking a political turn. Protesters demanded the end of the religious regime led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian government has blamed the US and Israel for these unrest.

Government Action, Airspace Closures, and Military Movement

More than 3,400 people have been reported dead since the protests began, prompting the US to threaten intervention. Amid rising tensions, Iran partially closed its airspace to commercial flights on Thursday without giving any reason. It reopened after about five hours, forcing several airlines to reroute their flights.

This move came amid reports that the US was withdrawing personnel from some of its military bases in the Middle East. According to a US official, the decision was taken after a senior Iranian official warned neighboring countries that Tehran would target US bases if Washington attacked.

Iran has imposed one of the most extensive internet blackouts in recent years, limiting communications and restricting independent reporting.
