Tehran: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Monday that the proposed meeting of senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey in Tehran could pave the way for increased cooperation on regional security issues. The meeting is expected to discuss a number of key issues, including the security situation in West Asia and rising tensions in the region.
According to the Iranian news agency ISNA, Baghaei stated in his weekly press conference that Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir, and Turkey’s Intelligence Agency chief Ibrahim Kalin are scheduled to arrive in Tehran on Monday. Baghaei said that the proposal for this meeting was raised during Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir’s recent visit to Iran. Iran welcomed the initiative positively and preparations for the meeting have been completed.
Emphasis on Regional Security Architecture
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Tehran welcomes efforts by regional countries to develop a security architecture based on their own interests and concerns. He stated that Iran has long insisted that regional countries should determine their own security architecture to ensure West Asia’s security. According to Baghaei, events of the past two years, and especially the past eight months, have demonstrated that establishing sustainable and reliable security is difficult without cooperation and trust among regional countries. He stated that this meeting could serve as a basis for further discussions toward developing a regional-led security architecture.
Meetings will also be held with the Iranian President and the Secretary of the National Security Council
Baghaei stated that the three senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey will also meet with the Iranian President and the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. He stated that several regional issues will be discussed in these meetings. These could include Israeli activities, the Palestinian situation, developments in the surrounding regions, and issues related to Lebanon. Bagheri stated that this is the first meeting, and final decisions on its agenda and topics of discussion will be made during the discussions.
Initiative to Enhance Regional Cooperation in West Asia
Ali Bagheri, Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, also described the visit as an effort to develop a security system in West Asia through cooperation with regional countries.
In an interview with the political department of Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, Bagheri said that during his previous visit to Iran, Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir informed him of the decision to bring senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan to Tehran and hold a joint meeting with Iranian officials.
According to Bagheri, the purpose of this visit is to discuss regional security with Major General Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Referring to Iran’s defense policy, he said that a defense system based on the country’s internal capabilities has become a successful model for national security. He also stated that Iran’s strategic policy focuses on ensuring security through regional countries and opposing external interference, including US and Israeli influence. Bagheri also described Israel’s role as a threat to regional stability.
