The Sensex and Nifty opened in the green today. In early trading, the rupee strengthened by 53 paise against the dollar. Following the announcement of a halt to the 107-day conflict between Iran and the US, markets across Asia, including India witnessed a rally. Japan’s Nikkei surged by over 4 percent. In the Indian stock market, the BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 1,080 points, while the NSE Nifty opened 330 points higher.
Among the 30 Sensex-listed companies, notable gainers included Indigo, Eicher, Bajaj Finance, and Asian Paints. Top gainers on the Nifty included Shriram Finance, Indigo, Eicher, Bajaj Finance, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV).
Optimism in Asian Markets
Asian markets rallied after US President Donald Trump announced a peace agreement between the US and Iran. Japan’s Nikkei index surged 4 percent, hitting an intraday record high. News of the peace deal and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz drove a surge in Asia-Pacific stocks. South Korea’s KOSPI index also recorded a 4.3 percent rise. The Australian stock market saw gains right at the opening; the ASX 200 rose by 125 points to trade at 8,928, with gains observed in seven of the index’s 11 sectors.
Drop in Crude Oil Prices
Crude oil prices fell by more than $3 per barrel. In early trading on Monday, the price of international benchmark Brent crude dropped by $3.45 to $83.88 per barrel. Meanwhile, the US benchmark crude fell by $3.95 to reach $80.93 per barrel.
Following the decline in global crude oil prices, a drop in petrol and diesel prices is also anticipated. However, experts believe it may still take several months for the oil market to fully stabilize after the supply chain disruptions caused by the war. Crude oil prices had surged sharply during the conflict, driving up the costs of petrol and various other products.
