New Delhi: The Embassy of Iran in New Delhi lowered its flag to half-mast after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in a US-Israel strike.
Khamenei was killed in what has been described as a major attack by the US and Israel, marking a turning point in Iran’s 46-year Shia-theocratic rule. Tehran’s retaliation has reportedly triggered tensions across parts of the Middle East.
Embassy expresses grief, warns of consequences
In a statement shared on X, the Iranian Embassy in India expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Khamenei and extended condolences to the people of Iran and the Muslim world.
“The Embassy extends its heartfelt condolences to His Holiness Imam Mahdi (May God hasten his reappearance), to the Muslim Ummah, to the great nation of Islamic Republic of Iran, and to all freedom-loving nations of the world,” the statement said.
The Embassy warned of “grave consequences” for the US and Israel, holding them fully responsible for the repercussions. It also said Iran would continue its path with strength and determination and that no disruption would be allowed in the country’s affairs.
IRGC vows strong retaliation
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed Khamenei’s death and vowed to punish those responsible. In a statement posted on its official Telegram page, the IRGC described the promised response as the “most ferocious offensive operation in history” against the US and Israel.
It said the IRGC, the Armed Forces, and the Basij forces would continue defending the country and deliver what it called a decisive punishment to aggressors.
The Iranian Cabinet also warned that the “great crime will never go unanswered.”
Trump confirms strike
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the 86-year-old cleric had been killed, ending his 36-year rule over Iran.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said, “He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do.
