New Delhi: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has urged the national selectors to consider T20I star Abhishek Sharma for inclusion in India’s plans for the ODI World Cup, stating that the left-hander’s explosive batting in T20 cricket could translate effectively into the 50-over format if used strategically.
Reacting to Abhishek’s recent performances in T20 cricket, Pathan acknowledged that the batter is currently behind Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the race for a permanent spot in the ODI setup. However, he emphasised that Abhishek’s power-hitting ability makes him a strong contender who deserves serious consideration.
‘Can maximise Powerplay in ODIs like T20s’: Pathan
Pathan believes that Abhishek’s inclusion could allow India to make better use of the Powerplay overs in ODIs, similar to their aggressive approach in T20 internationals. Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, Pathan wrote:
“Abhishek Sharma should be in the considerations for the 50-over World Cup. Guys like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are ahead of him at the moment. But imagine him maximising the Powerplay in a similar fashion to T20s.”
The former all-rounder feels that Abhishek’s fearless stroke play and ability to dominate bowlers early in the innings could give India an added edge at the top of the order in the longer white-ball format.
Blistering T20 form and strong List A record
Abhishek Sharma has emerged as one of India’s most destructive top-order batters in the shortest format, impressing with his clean hitting, ability to clear the infield with ease, and growing maturity in shot selection. He showcased his explosive form with a stunning 84 off just 35 balls against New Zealand in the first T20I at Nagpur on Wednesday, helping India register a commanding 48-run victory.
The 25-year-old is set to open for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin on February 7, which will also mark his first senior ICC tournament. Although Abhishek is yet to make his ODI debut, his List A record strengthens his case for selection. He has played 69 List A matches, scoring 2,196 runs at a strike rate of over 100, including four centuries and eight half-centuries. He has also smashed 69 sixes and 266 boundaries, underlining his attacking potential in the 50-over format.
With Abhishek continuing to deliver consistent performances, Pathan’s comments have added momentum to the debate over whether India should look beyond conventional options and embrace a more aggressive approach in ODIs ahead of the World Cup.
