Irrigation Revolution: Canal water reaches every farm in Punjab, yield increased

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s initiatives have marked a historic transformation in Punjab’s irrigation system. Where once it was challenging to deliver water to tail-end areas, canal water now reaches almost every farm. 84% of the state’s irrigation is now powered by canal water, compared to only 68% previously.

This achievement is the result of a 14-point program implemented under the Integrated Provincial Water Plan. So far, 15,914 waterways have been restored, and water has returned to 916 canals and minors. The arrival of canal water in areas that had been dry for 35 to 40 years has given farmers new hope.

The state government has laid 2,400 kilometers of underground pipelines, providing irrigation to 30,282 hectares of land. Farmers are being provided subsidies of up to 90% at the group level and 50% at the individual level. Drip and sprinkler irrigation systems have also been implemented in 6,000 hectares.

For water conservation, 28 pipeline-based projects are delivering 300 million liters of treated water per day to farms. Additionally, 160 water harvesting structures and solar lift irrigation schemes have been implemented in 125 villages in the Kandi region.

Chief Minister Mann said that this is not just water management, but a major step towards realizing the vision of “Canal to Every Farm.” Punjab is now becoming a model for water conservation and sustainable agriculture.
