High Court Refuses Relief to Convicts in Jaipur Blast and Bomb Case

Jaipur: The High Court has, for the time being, refused to grant relief to two terrorists in a case involving the discovery of a live bomb during the serial blasts that rocked Jaipur 18 years ago. The High Court dismissed the applications for a stay filed by terrorists Mohammad Sarwar Azmi and Shahbaz Ahmed.

Following the refusal of the bench comprising Justice Indrajit Singh and Justice Bhuvan Goyal to grant immediate relief to the two terrorists, they will have to remain in jail.

It is pertinent to note that on April 4, 2025, a Special Court for the Jaipur Bomb Blasts convicted Saifur Rahman, Mohammad Saif, Mohammad Sarwar Aami and Shahbaz Ahmed, sentencing them to life imprisonment.

On May 13, 2008, eight serial blasts occurred in Jaipur. A ninth bomb was discovered near a guest house in Chandpole Bazaar; it was successfully defused just 15 minutes before it was set to explode. The blasts claimed the lives of 71 people and left 185 injured.

Terrorists Argue: “We Have Been Acquitted in 8 Cases”

Representing both terrorists, their counsel argued that while the trial court had initially sentenced them to death in eight of the blast-related cases, the High Court subsequently set aside those sentences and acquitted them. They contended that in the case concerning the discovery of the live bomb, the prosecution has presented the exact same evidence and facts.

They questioned how the trial court could impose a sentence based on the same set of facts when they had already been acquitted in similar cases. They further submitted that they have been incarcerated for a prolonged period. Noting that the hearing of the appeal in this specific case is likely to take a considerable amount of time, they requested that they be granted the benefit of bail.

The government says, “More evidence has been presented.”

Arguing on behalf of the government, Additional Advocate General Rajesh Choudhary, along with Advocates Aman Agarwal and Neha Goyal, asserted that the primary objective of terrorists is to spread terror. They pointed out that these individuals had claimed responsibility for the blasts by sending emails to two news channels.

They stated that in this particular case, the prosecution has presented additional evidence including the recovery of those specific emails on the basis of which the trial court has sentenced them to life imprisonment.
