Jaipur: Rajasthan Police have apprehended 45-year-old Rahul Jha, accused of murdering his wife and three daughters at their home in Jaipur’s Kardhani area, from a hotel in Reengus, police said on Monday.
Jha was arrested on Sunday night after investigators traced his movements through CCTV footage from Jaipur, Khatu Shyam Ji and Reengus.
Accused Visited Three Temples After Murders
According to police, after allegedly committing the murders, Jha travelled by e-rickshaw to three temples in Jaipur and spent the entire day there.
Police also found that Jha frequently visited the Khatu Shyam Ji temple and had reportedly visited the temple five or six days before the murders.
As investigators gathered information about Jha from neighbours and acquaintances, they learnt about his frequent visits to Khatu Shyam Ji. A police team subsequently visited the temple and examined CCTV footage, where Jha was reportedly spotted near a hotel.
Investigators then examined CCTV footage from Reengus railway station. Jha was reportedly seen wandering around the railway station and the Bikaner bus stand throughout the day. These movements eventually helped police trace him to a hotel in Reengus, where he was apprehended.
Police Probe Suspected Motive
During interrogation, Jha allegedly told police that he had been under stress over issues involving his wife and eldest daughter.
According to the preliminary investigation, Jha had allegedly intended to kill only his wife and eldest daughter. Police said he suspected that his eldest daughter was in a relationship and believed that a man was visiting their home.
Jha reportedly claimed that his wife would defend their daughter, which frequently led to arguments between the couple. He had allegedly been asking his wife for the past two to three months to counsel their daughter.
Police said Jha was also suspicious that someone was visiting his daughter at night and was upset about her frequently going out with acquaintances. Investigators said she had recently participated in the Kanwar Yatra with a male acquaintance, after which Jha had repeatedly warned her to stay away from strangers.
Two Younger Daughters Also Killed
Preliminary investigation suggests that Jha had allegedly planned to kill his wife and eldest daughter. However, police suspect he was also concerned about who would look after his two younger daughters if he was arrested and jailed following the killings.
According to investigators, Jha had brought two large stones from outside the house and carried one of them inside. Police said he first attacked his wife and then killed his eldest daughter.
He subsequently allegedly attacked his two younger daughters, who were sleeping in a downstairs room.
The woman and her three daughters were later found murdered at their house in the Kardhani area of Jaipur.
Why Was Jha’s Elderly Father Spared?
Investigators also questioned Jha about why he did not kill his 85-year-old father.
According to police sources, Jha’s father receives a monthly pension of Rs 33,000. Investigators reportedly found that Jha’s brother was expected to take care of their father after the rest of the family was killed. Police suspect this was the reason the elderly man was spared.
The investigation is underway, and police are examining the circumstances surrounding the murders and Jha’s movements after the alleged crime.
