New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday met Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, to review bilateral ties and discuss expanding cooperation in key sectors, including higher education, artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology, healthcare, water supply and capacity building.

The high-level meeting highlighted India’s growing engagement with Tanzania and its continued focus on strengthening development partnerships across Africa through education, technology and institutional collaboration.

Focus on AI, education, healthcare and digital collaboration

Following the meeting, Jaishankar said the discussions covered several priority sectors aimed at further deepening cooperation between India and Zanzibar.

The two leaders explored opportunities to enhance collaboration in higher education, skill development, healthcare, water management, artificial intelligence, digital technology and other emerging sectors.

Jaishankar also highlighted the role of IIT Madras Zanzibar as a symbol of the strong educational partnership between India and Zanzibar, describing it as an example of India’s long-term commitment to Africa’s education and development priorities.

President Mwinyi’s India visit strengthens strategic partnership

President Hussein Ali Mwinyi is on an official visit to India after attending the 63rd Convocation Ceremony of IIT Madras in Chennai as the Chief Guest.

During his Chennai visit, he underlined the importance of academic cooperation through the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus, India’s first overseas IIT campus, which has emerged as a landmark initiative in bilateral educational collaboration.

The visit reflects the growing momentum in the India-Tanzania Strategic Partnership, with both countries working to strengthen cooperation in education, technology, innovation and human resource development.

India expands engagement with Africa through development partnerships

President Mwinyi’s visit is expected to further reinforce India-Tanzania relations by promoting collaboration in digital innovation, healthcare, capacity building, education and infrastructure development.

India has increasingly focused on expanding its engagement with African nations through development partnerships, technology sharing and institutional cooperation. The IIT Madras Zanzibar campus has become a flagship initiative showcasing India’s commitment to supporting higher education and skill development across the African continent.
