Jalandhar: Attempt-to-murder accused killed in Police encounter

A suspect wanted in an attempted murder case was killed in a police encounter in Jalandhar. Police from the Mehatpur station had gone to apprehend him. The police stated that they asked the young man to surrender, and a crowd gathered at the scene.

Someone from the crowd fired a shot. In the ensuing crossfire, the young man was hit by bullets. However, his family alleges that he was in the bathroom and the police fired at him from behind. He was struck by two bullets in the upper thigh, resulting in his death.

According to reports, the deceased has been identified as Lavpreet, alias Lavi, a resident of Mehatpur. The police had received information that Lavpreet—wanted in an attempted murder case—had returned home. Acting on this tip-off, Mehatpur SHO Aman Saini arrived at Bangiwal village with a police team. A confrontation ensued between the police and the accused, his family members, and bystanders, which quickly escalated.

Police claim: Someone from the crowd fired first

According to the police, a scuffle broke out involving the crowd during the dispute, and the sound of gunfire was heard at the scene. Subsequently, the police fired two rounds in self-defense. During this exchange, Lavpreet was hit in the leg. He was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Nakodar in an injured state, where he died during treatment.

People present at the scene recorded the entire incident. The deceased’s uncle, Chhinda Singh, stated that the Mehatpur police had come to arrest Lavpreet. The young man was in the bathroom at the time. When he stepped out, the SHO’s gunman—who was in plainclothes—fired at him from behind. Meanwhile, SSP Harvinder Singh Virk stated that the police team is investigating every aspect of the case, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.
